Ephyra

Ephyra, a robot featured at this exhibition equipped with a flexible "skin" andhighly-sensitive touch organs, is intended to be a mini simulation of mankind' s future creations. The cylinder-shaped cloth with its mouth wide open upward is a supreme example of extending the limitations of the cutting -edge warp knitting machine of Raschel Seamless Ware.
この展示物、エフィラは、鋭敏な触覚器がそなわった柔軟な皮膚を持つ、 未来の人工物のささやかなシミュレーションです。天に向かって大きく開いた筒状の布は、 最先端のラッセル織機の製造限界に挑戦した最大級のものです。 その筒は、下方に向かうに従って高密度に編み込まれており、皮膚のように柔らかく 機械体を包み込んでいます。
This cylinder woven in a denser weave toward the bottom wraps the mechanical body in softness like "skin" . Twelve arms, driven by hydraulics, are set up in a radial pattern at the center of the machine. As if to explore their extended boundaries, these tentacles expand and contract in all directions, pushing out the highly elastic fiber that covers them in a slow, repetitive movement.
中央の機械体には、空気圧で駆動される12本のアームが放射状に配置されており、 自分の身体の拡張限界を確かめるかのように、この伸縮性の高い布を八方に押し広げては 収縮することを繰り返しています。
In fact, these arms, equipped with sense organs, serve as tentacles, and each is equipped with touch sensors at its extremity. When visitors, enticed by the tips of the protruding tentacles, try to touch the robot with their hands, Ephyra reacts like a living thing, for example a snail. The robot has the ability to respond to the slightest stimulation; whether or not the tentacle has been touched, it may retract it at unbelievable speed.Though the tentacle remains hidden for some time after, if you wait for a while you will see it slowly emerge once again. Then, until someone else touches it, a graceful, gentle movement of expansion and contraction is played out.
実はこのアームは、感覚器を持った「触手」として作られました。 それぞれのアームの先端にはセンサーが組み込まれ、何かが触れたことを検知することが できるのです。突き出された触手の先端に誘われて来場者が手で触れようとすると、 エフィラはある種の生物、例えばカタツムリ、と同じような反応を見せます。 つまり、指先が触れるか触れないかのわずかな刺激に反応し、 驚くほどの速度で触手を引っ込めるのです。刺激を受けた触手は少しの間縮んだままですが、 待っているとまたゆっくりと伸びてきます。そしてまた、誰かが触れるまで、 おだやかな収縮を繰り返します。（山中俊治）
